Enteral Nutrition

Enteral therapy  is for patients who need assistance getting enough nutrition.  This can be due to a medical condition that does not allow nutrients to be absorbed or when a person is unable to eat or swallow.   There are two main types of Enteral Nutrition:

  1. Supplemental nutrition in which the person is able to swallow, but needs extra calories or   nutrients in their diet.   The person drinks the formula in addition to or instead of eating meals.  There are specialty formulas available for different  medical conditions such as diabetes.  Most insurances DO NOT pay for supplements.

  2. Tube feeding is used when a person can not swallow and has a tube placed into the stomach or small intestines to receive feedings.  This is the only Enteral feeding in which Medicare or Medicaid will pay for you to receive.   There is a wide variety of formulas available depending on your medical condition and specific nutrient needs.
  • Blue Ridge Home Care has trained clinicians who can assist you and your physician to determine which formula is best for you.
